"“So I can eat gravy” was my stock response two and a half years ago when first asked what motivated me to start running. I’d done the rounds with diets and didn’t believe I would ever find one that I would stick to for more then a few days at a time. I decided that exercise was the answer and I thought that if I ran I wouldn’t have to worry so much about what I ate. I do love to eat. Months passed and the running became easier, I even trained for and finished my first marathon, but still my weight never did change substantially and to add salt to that wound I found that my pace had slowed as well. But, the marathon was an experience that changed the way I had been looking at running. Within minutes of dragging my ass across that finish-line I was already thinking about what I could have, and should have, done differently and better. I decided immediately that I would be running another marathon but that I would do the next one right. This meant that I would have to take the steps to lose the extra weight and if it included giving up gravy then so be it. I’m twenty pounds lighter now and getting close to my self-imposed “maximum weight to start marathon training” goal and I’m feeling optimistic that this will be the year of my second marathon. I don’t often get asked why I run any more but when asked what has motivated me to loose weight, the answer is “So I can run.” Running works".

Running Groups
Motivation, Fun, Friendships and Safety!
The Eugene Running Company wants to inspire and invigorate your passion for running. What better way to do so than to run with other runners? Runners of all levels — beginners to veterans — are invited to join our free weekly group runs from the store. Bring a friend or make new ones!
We record your mileage that add up to special mileage awards starting with the 100 mile club shirt.
( While running is fun and healthy, there are inherent risks to health and safety. We ask that you consult with your physician prior to starting to run.
We ask that any child who would like to participate is accompanied by a responsible adult who can ensure the safety for the child.
Additionally while we accompany the group and try to keep account of it's members, we still require each member sign a waiver of liability for Eugene Running Company or any of it's members. Minors must have a legal guardian sign on his or her behalf.)

SAFETY FIRST!!
Tips for Running Safety by the Road Runners Club of America:
Follow the rules of the road - travel on the right and pass on the left.
* Don't run down the middle of the trail. Run to the right side to allow others to pass safely.
* Don't wear headphones - but if you insist on going against this RRCA safety guideline, keep the volume low or only wear one headphone.
* If you are running an out-and-back route on a trail, don't just make a sudden u-turn at your turn around point. Stop, step to the right to allow oncoming traffic the opportunity to pass.
* If you are wearing headphones, now is a good time to pop out an earphone to make sure no one is approaching.
* Ensure the trail is clear of oncoming traffic (runners, cyclists, in-line skaters, etc.) then make your u-turn. Making a sudden u-turn without looking over your shoulder is a good way to get hit by an oncoming cyclist or skater.
* Avoid running on trails in the evening if they are not well lit and do not have regular traffic.
* Never run more than two abreast if you are running in a group. Don't be a trail hog. While pedestrians have the right of way on most trails, the goal is to share the trails.
* Alert people when you are passing them - don't assume they are aware of their surroundings. A simple "on your left" warning will suffice.
* Be alert on blind curves.
* Stop at stop signs if the trail crosses a roadway. Don't assume cars on the road will stop for the trail crossing.
* Be mindful of young children on the trail - their movements can be unpredictable. Slowing the pace a bit when you pass small children on the trail is a wise idea. Use this as an opportunity to slow the pace then pick up the tempo.
* Respect private property along the trail.
* Don't litter. If you can't find a trash can, carry your trash home.
* Get approval from local authorities before planning a race or training event on your local multi-use trail.
* If you run with a dog, keep it on a short leash. Long leashes can create a hazard for your pet and passing runners, cyclists or skaters.
